Greetings fellow Democrats! Thank you so much for the opportunity to communicate with you.

Now that Proposition 93 has failed, and our good friend and well respected colleague Betty Karnette is being termed out, I want to take a moment to tell you a little bit about myself, my background, and why I am running to be your next representative in the 54th State Assembly District.

For nearly 40 years, I have participated in nearly every aspect of community life—as a parent, educator, family counselor, community organizer, mental health provider, and as a member of various Democratic clubs. Like you, I have always been active in local Democratic politics. I have called, walked, and stuffed envelopes in many Democratic races, and have been elected to serve as both a delegate and an alternate at two national conventions. I have attended most all of the state conventions as a delegate, standing up for our core Democratic issues. It is this long held commitment to the community that helped me to be elected to the Long Beach Unified School District Board of Education in 1994 and then to the Long Beach City Council in 2001. Then, in 2005, the 27 cities comprising the Gateway region elected me to serve on the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, where I have found additional opportunities to fight for clean air and to reduce traffic congestion.

My candidacy is an extension of all these experiences. I will promote those causes we all care so much about—protecting public education funding at all levels, fighting for a health care solution affordable to every Californian, continuing to challenge our ports to clean up faster and end the staggering number of premature deaths caused by air pollution (which is why I have been endorsed by the California League of Conservation Voters), and finding every opportunity to address the global warming crisis.

As a local elected official for the past 14 years, I have never lost sight of my roots in Democratic politics. I will continue to fight for the issues important to our community and our party, while ensuring that no one is disenfranchised or ignored.

I humbly ask you to join me in this fight and to support my candidacy in the 54th Assembly District.
