Downtown San Pedro Development |

Our August
meeting was an eye-opener for most of the attendees. Sue Castillo, a part of the Central
Neighborhood Council, who calls herself the ‘Land-use Mavin’ talked of the many
projects for loft, condo, and apartment development that are proposed and/or
partway or entirely through the permitting process for San Pedro’s
downtown. Jo Anne Aplet, a retired
environmental consultant, who has worked on preparing the Environmental Impact
Reports or Statements for many projects, discussed what could be done by the
citizens to weigh in on any particular project. The members had a hint about the size of the projected change in the
town, just from observing the building going on. But the actual number of housing units
proposed is 1351! This does not include
Ponte Vista’s proposal. Some of these
projects have already been built, but some are only in the beginning stages of
permitting and looking for funding.
If you would like
to check out the projects, look at our table of projects and addresses. The
table provides links to the City Zoning map, to show the location of the
property, and the current zoning for that property. If you want to
comment on the permitting of any of these projects, Jo Anne suggested reading
the local papers, the “Daily Breeze” or “Random Lengths” for information or for
notices about upcoming meetings when the projects will be considered. The city planning web site also gives
information on upcoming agendas and minutes of the meetings of the Planning
Commission.
